What a Label Price Is Made Of: Four Cost Parts

A self-adhesive price is four components plus quantity logic. Knowing which component moves the number makes quotations negotiable.

A self-adhesive label price is not one number attached to one material. It is four components stacked, plus a quantity rule on top. Every one of the four can move independently, which is why comparing labels by face stock alone is misleading.

Component 1 — the face stock

The largest single share, and the one with the widest spread: coated paper sits at one end, specialty and metallised films at the other. Within one face class, weight (g/m²) moves the price in steps. This is also the component buyers see first and over-weight.

Component 2 — the adhesive

Class matters more than brand: water-based, hot-melt and special low-temperature or low-residue grades sit at different levels. The adhesive is also where application problems are bought and sold — a cheap adhesive that lifts on the line costs more than it saves.

Component 3 — the liner

Glassine weight (40g/50g/65g) and PET liners sit at different levels, and the liner decides die-cutting and dispensing behavior. Two codes that share face and adhesive can still differ here.

Component 4 — finishing

Back printing, varnish, lamination — each adds a step and a number. This is the most negotiable component, because it maps directly to process, not to material cost.

The quantity rule on top

Tier discounts reward area, not rolls: a wider roll at the same length crosses the tier sooner. The calculator on this site shows the tiers live — try the price calculator with two widths and watch the tier shift.

Frequently asked

Why do two codes with the same face stock differ in price?

Because the face is only one of four components. Adhesive class, liner type and finishing each move the number; two codes sharing a face can sit in different price bands entirely.

What is the fastest way to lower label cost without changing quality?

Consolidate specifications. Fewer distinct constructions per order mean larger runs per construction, which moves you into the next quantity tier — often worth more than any component swap.
